1960 - River significantly re-coursed

The 1960’s were a period of regular flooding in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. In order to mitigate the possibility of further flooding the Whakatāne River was significantly re-coursed in the 1960’s to help prevent flooding and to provide for expansion of the town.
