1984 - Residents “livened-up”

Helicopter named ‘Llama’ used to position power poles during the Matahi installation.

In December 1984, Matahi Valley residents were “livened-up” for the first time with a celebration being held at the Matahi marae. With over 200 present to witness the event, general manager Fred Bland flicked the switch. Residents talked about the changes electricity would bring, but board chairman Platt Gow noted, “They were sad about the changes because of the good things in being self-sufficient. There was a feeling of sadness, loss and perhaps apprehension.”
