2011 - Christchurch earthquake

In September 2010 a magnitude 7.1 earthquake damaged buildings and weakened infrastructure in Christchurch. This was followed on 22 February 2011 with a magnitude 6.3 earthquake which not only destroyed buildings in Christchurch but took the lives of 185 people, primarily within the central business district.
